London Travel Delays Continue After Marathon Crowds

London commuters, tourists, and weekend travellers are experiencing continued delays today as the city manages the after-effects of one of its busiest major event weekends.

Large crowds attending the London Marathon placed heavy pressure on roads, Underground stations, buses, and walking routes across central and east London, with some disruption continuing into the afternoon and evening.

Transport for London advised passengers to check live travel updates, especially around areas including Greenwich, Canary Wharf, Tower Bridge, Westminster, Embankment, and the West End.

A transport operations analyst said:
“When an event of this size takes place, disruption can continue even after the race finishes as roads reopen gradually and crowd movement remains high.”

Several bus services were diverted during the day, while some central stations experienced congestion due to returning spectators and participants.

Taxi demand and ride-hailing prices also rose in busy zones.

Motorists faced delays on roads affected by closures, diversions, and pedestrian crossing volumes near the marathon route.

Despite pressure on the network, transport authorities said services continued carrying very high numbers of passengers successfully.

The London Marathon is one of the largest annual events in the capital and regularly brings significant economic benefits alongside short-term travel challenges.

Retailers, cafés, pubs, hotels, and tourism venues near the route benefited from increased visitor numbers.

Many Londoners chose to adjust plans, travel earlier, or avoid the busiest areas altogether.

Remote working also remained popular for some commuters seeking to avoid central congestion.

Tourism officials said London’s ability to host major events while maintaining transport movement remains an important strength for the city’s global reputation.

The combination of marathon crowds, warm spring weather, and weekend visitors created particularly strong demand today.

Rail operators also warned passengers to check onward services if returning home later this evening, with engineering works affecting some routes outside London.

By tonight, traffic conditions are expected to improve as closures are lifted and crowd numbers fall.

For now, passengers are being reminded of a familiar London message — allow extra time and plan ahead.
